G\u2019day, mates. If you\u2019ve been to the GP lately and walked out with a lighter wallet than expected, you\u2019re not alone. Out-of-pocket costs for doctor visits have been creeping up for years, and bulk billing \u2013 that glorious system where Medicare covers the lot \u2013 has been harder to find than a parking spot at Bondi on a sunny Saturday. But hold onto your Vegemite toast, because the biggest shake-up to Medicare since 1984 is kicking off tomorrow, November 1, 2025<\/strong>, and it could save you hundreds of dollars a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Big One: Bulk Billing Is Back \u2013 For Everyone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From tomorrow, 1 November 2025<\/strong>, every Australian with a Medicare card<\/strong> can walk into a participating GP clinic<\/strong> and be bulk-billed<\/strong> \u2014 no gap fee, no wallet needed<\/strong>. That\u2019s right: kids, pensioners, workers, tradies \u2014 everyone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the largest Medicare investment since 1984<\/strong> \u2014 a $7.9 billion, 10-year plan<\/strong> to triple<\/strong> the number of 100% bulk-billing practices from ~1,600 today to 4,800 by 2030<\/strong>. The goal? 90% of all GP visits free within five years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a big expansion of bulk billing as a result of our record investment,\u201d<\/strong> Health Minister Mark Butler<\/a> said last week. \u201cIt\u2019s good for patients \u2014 millions of Aussies will be able to see their doctor without extra costs.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But it won\u2019t happen overnight. Clinics must opt in<\/strong> to the new incentives. The government says ~900 practices have already committed to 100% bulk billing from Day 1<\/strong>, but many will take months or years to join.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What this means for you<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • National bulk billing is down<\/strong> from 86% in 2021\u201322<\/strong> to 77.7%<\/strong> in 2023\u201324 \u2014 a drop of 8.3 percentage points<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Working-age adults (16\u201364)<\/strong> are hit hardest: only ~57\u201360%<\/strong> of their GP visits are bulk-billed \u2014 and in some states (like WA), it\u2019s still falling<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • A decade ago<\/strong>, the national rate peaked at over 86%<\/strong> \u2014 so we\u2019ve lost ground, especially for everyday workers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    This reform fixes that<\/strong>. From tomorrow, GPs get higher payments to bulk bill everyone<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 not just kids and pensioners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
